What can you drive with a Class B license?
A Class B license lets you drive:
- A school bus with seating for more than 24 passengers
- Vehicles covered by C, D, E, F, and G class licenses
What Can You NOT Drive with a Class B license?
The Class B license does NOT permit you to:
- Pull a trailer equipped with air brakes (see Class A training).
- Drive a full-size tractor-trailer combination (see Class A training).
- Drive a vehicle pulling a double-trailer (see Class A training).
- Train another driver on a vehicle that requires full class A privileges to drive.
- Drive smaller truck-trailer combinations (e.g. a pick-up truck pulling a recreational, horse, or utility trailer) (see Class A/R training).
What are the requirements to obtain the Class B license in Ontario?
To be eligible for the Class B license, you must:
- Be at least 18 years old.
- Hold a valid Ontario license (other than a G1, G2, M, M1, or M2)
- Pass a vision test.
- Submit a valid medical report
- Pass a knowledge test about operating school buses and trucks.
- Pass a road test using a vehicle that meets the requirements for a Class B license.
- Successfully complete an approved School Bus Driver Improvement Course (SBDIC).
- Pass a Criminal Record and Judicial Matters (CRJM) check.
- Have fewer than 6 demerit points on your driving record.
- You will not be eligible to get a Class B license if your driver’s license has been suspended during the past 12 months for any offence outlined in the Official MTO Bus Handbook.
Criminal Record and Judicial Matters (CRJM) Check
If you’re applying for a Class B license, you need to pass a CRJM check or equivalent.
- Contact your local police station to determine where you can obtain your CRJM check. You can also choose to use an authorized criminal record check provider.
- Once you have completed the criminal record check, mail it with your driver’s license number to:

How Much Does It Cost To Get Your Class B License In Ontario?
Obtaining a Class B license can be a costly venture. Expected costs should include mandatory DriveTest fees, SBDIC fees, and practical training costs.
If you are 18 to 64 years old :
- Drivetest commercial license package (paid to Drivetest; includes 1 knowledge test attempt and 1 road test attempt): $122.75
- each additional knowledge test attempt (paid to Drivetest): $23.75
- each additional road test attempt (paid to Drivetest): $99.00
If you are 65 to 79 years old :
- Drivetest commercial license package (paid to Drivetest; includes 1 knowledge test attempt and 1 road test attempt): $37.75
- each additional knowledge test attempt (paid to Drivetest): $23.75
- each additional road test attempt (paid to Drivetest): $14.00
