What can you drive with a Class A/R license?

The Class A/R license is meant for drivers looking to operate smaller truck-trailer combinations (e.g. a pick-up truck pulling a recreational, horse, or utility trailer).

With a Class AR license, you can also drive:

    • A car or light truck covered by a Class A or Class G license.
    • Heavy trucks covered by the Class D license.

What Can You NOT Drive with a Class A/R license?

The Class A/R license does NOT permit you to:

    • Pull a trailer equipped with air brakes. 
    • Drive a full-size tractor-trailer combination.
    • Drive a vehicle pulling a double-trailer. 
    • Train another driver on a vehicle that requires full Class A privileges to drive.
    • Drive a bus carrying passengers.
    • Drive a motorcycle or a moped.

What are the requirements to obtain the Class A/R license in Ontario?

To be eligible for the Class A/R license, you must:

    • Be at least 18 years old.
    • Hold a valid Ontario license (other than a G1, G2, M, M1, or M2)
    • Pass a vision test.
    • Submit a valid medical report 
    • Pass a knowledge test about operating large trucks and tractor-trailer combinations. 
    • Pass a road test using a vehicle that meets the requirements for a Class A/R license.

If you are 18 to 64 years old :

  • Drivetest commercial license package (paid to Drivetest; includes 1 knowledge test attempt and 1 road test attempt): $122.75
  • each additional knowledge test attempt (paid to Drivetest): $23.75
  • each additional road test attempt (paid to Drivetest): $99.00

If you are 65 to 79 years old :

  • Drivetest commercial license package (paid to Drivetest; includes 1 knowledge test attempt and 1 road test attempt): $37.75
  • each additional knowledge test attempt (paid to Drivetest): $23.75
  • each additional road test attempt (paid to Drivetest): $14.00
